  Statistics 200
Statistics 200 is one of those classes required for my major. It also happens to be required for a lot of other majors, too. STAT 200 is one of the highest enrolled classes at Penn State. A basic statistics course, STAT 200 is divided in one large group lecture, coupled with two labs. (There is one large group lecture for every 4 sections of the class.)

The basic class setup was: lecture on Monday, practice exercise of the material on Tuesday, followed by another practice exercise and a quiz on Thursday. With a few exceptions, that was the general class structure. In addition to the quizzes, there also were weekly homework assignments and a group project.

Similar to Information Sciences and Technology 110 and Speech Communication 100B, Statistics 200 was a Problem Based Learning class. The quizzes, actually called "Readiness Assessment Quizzes", were issued twice. First we would take them individually, and next within our group of four people. The scores were added together when establishing the final quiz score.

Out four person groups were kept constant the entire semester. This helped the groups form a bond, or unity, which grew with each quiz we took. That helped for when we had to work cohesively to develop our final project during the last two weeks of the semester.

I appreciated this course for the introductory statistical knowledge it gave me. Almost immediately I found myself using this knowledge during my internship with the Web Strategies Implementation Team when I had to develop and analyze a survey of Web Professionals. I also liked Dr. Patricia Buchanan's teaching style. Although I generally dislike lectures, Dr. Buchanan presented the material very nicely. I understood it so well that Dr. Buchanan sent me an e-mail at the end of the semester saying I was one of the few students in all her sections that actually had an average above 100% in the class! Needless to say, I was very pleased!

Class grade received: A
