| This
class should have been harder than it was. It has been my experience that
summer classes are generally easier than their fall or spring equivalents.
It is also my experience that 8:00 AM classes are easier than the sections
offered later in the day. And the fact that I had studied Spanish for six
of the last seven years prior to taking Spanish 3 probably also had something
to do with my success in that class. I owe a lot of it to Sr. Gil, my high
school Spanish teacher, who prepared me very nicely for this "higher
level" Spanish class.
IST is the only Bachelor of Science major that requires proficiency in a foreign language. Proficiency in a foreign language, as defined by Penn State, is passing any level three language course. So I took Spanish 3 basically to prove my proficiency in the language. The class was a real blast! The course is shortened to only six weeks because of the summer, but the class meets every day for two hour and ten minutes to make up the difference. So I feared this 2 hour class every day at 8:00 AM would be dreadful, but actually it was wonderful! We had a very unique mixture of students in our 22 person class, which led for some great discussions, both in Spanish and in English. We learned a variety of grammatical rules in Spanish, from simple conjugation to present perfect, all of which I learned in high school (with the exception of the imperfect subjunctive). I had no problem with any of the material in class. We had two oral exams, both of which I had to do solo because my parents was in Detroit at the time. Even with the set back, the oral exams and the written exams were both no problem. I went through that class like a truck barreling down the highway. The best memory I can take from that class was our fiesta. One of the students, Julie, invited all of us over to her house one night toward the end of the class for a fiesta. We hung around and chatted about the class 'til the late hours of the night. Our teacher even showed up and spent the evening with us! It was really one of the most unique experiences I have ever felt in my academic career - one I am sure will never happen again. Fortunately,
this class did not interfere with my internship. I took the class early
enough in the morning so that it did not affect the rest of my work day.
It forced me to better manage my time over the summer and was well worth
it. Spanish 3 with Natalia Navarro was one of the best classes I have
taken at Penn State. Class grade received: A
