| PSU 017 - Freshman Seminar | |||
| All
students at Penn State are required to take a Freshman Seminar course. PSU
017 is the Freshman Seminar for students in the IST Major. When I scheduled
my classes for my first semester, there were four sections of PSU 017, two
of which were schedulable for me. For no other reason then this, I chose
the section taught Monday morning just to get it over with. Little did I
know how much that decision would affect me.
The course was taught by Dr. Fred Loomis. Loomis, who also was the Executive Director of the IST Solutions Institute at the time, focused our course on two simple topics. First, résumé writing a career building. Second, time management skills. The course met once a week. Essentially all we did during that block of time was talk about how we are dealing with the college experience. About half way through the semester, we were broken into teams. My team, named MyIST, started simply as a team to update the course website. Eventually we started working on integrating our class with the new Penn State Student Portal, and then the rest was history. Dr. Loomis was kind enough to take 30 minutes out of his busy schedule to give each student a mock interview. When I applied for my job at "Computer Associates," Dr. Loomis interacted with me as if he represented that company. It wasn't until he slipped during the interview that I saw his ulterior motives. He really wanted to interview me for a job position with the IST Solutions Institute working on the Web Strategies Implementation Team. I pretty much accepted right away. The internship with the Web Strategies Implementation Team has been my focus during all of Summer 2001 - a great experience. A chance I never would have gotten if not for choosing Dr. Loomis' section of PSU 017. Class grade received: A
