Information Sciences and Technology 495 Internship

All IST students are required to have at least one internship before graduation. If all goes as I plan, I am hoping to have an internship every summer while I am at Penn State. My initial plan was to find a company I would like to work at once I leave school, preferably a large telecommunications company, start off with an internship and then work my way up. But after meeting Dr. Fred Loomis in my PSU 017 Freshman Seminar class, those plans changed.

Dr. Loomis told me that he was going to be serving as the Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President and Provost over the summer and asked me to work with him on this new Web Strategy Initiative. At first I was hesitant because working for Penn State was not the kind of summer internship I envisioned. I received other offers - both International Paper and Triveni Digital, Inc. offered me work over the summer. But after realizing how powerful an internship with Penn State could be, I changed my plan. I figured I could work at Penn State for one summer and then spend the next two at that corporate telecommunications firm. At Penn State I could build some contacts that I could use to my advantage over the next three years while I study here, I thought. Boy was that true!

This internship has been a dream. I spent the entire summer meeting some very important people both in and out of the University. In fact, I served on a committee with 25 executives and managers from different units around Penn State on the Web Strategies Implementation Team. The job has been both extremely rewarding and very flexible. It meets both my personal and professional needs.

To receive credit for my work as an internship, I had to file with the IST Internship Office, complete two evaluations with my boss, and write a final report that was reviewed by the Senior Associate Dean of the School of Information Sciences and Technology, Dr. Joe Lambert. Needless to say, since I enjoyed the internship so much, the report was a breeze to write. And I liked the internship so much that I continued with the Web Strategies Implementation Team even after my internship was completed and I am planning to work part time during the school year to assist as a key member of the committee.
