  IST Independent Study
The purpose of IST 296 is to provide independent study credits to students who want to pursue an enriching academic activity that is not feasible with other academic courses. For me, that meant teaching with my former IST 110 professor, Dr. Steve Sawyer.

After successfully completing IST 110 in the fall semester of my freshman year, Dr. Sawyer asked me if I would like to serve as a Teaching Intern in his spring semester class of IST 110. My role would be to guide the students through problem based learning modules similar to the ones I took in the fall. I went to every class with the students and met with each group individually to help focus them on the class problems. And on the few occasions where Dr. Sawyer was on research trips, I led the class in that day's discussions.

I consider this experience to be valuable for me because it allowed me to see what teaching a college class is like from the other side of the desk. It gave me a brief glimpse into what TA's at Penn State go through. The IST 296 Teaching Internship also gave me the chance to get to know Dr. Sawyer better, a teacher with a unique learning style and insight on teaching that I consider to be very admirable.

Class grade received: A
