  Information Sciences and Technology 210H
Information Sciences and Technology 210H was a unique course for me. First, it was not an Honors course, but I received honors credit in the course by pursuing an Honors Option. The course focus is around databases. In the course, we learned SQL and a variety of data forms. Essentially, the course teaches everything up to, but not including, database implementation. To make this an Honors Option course, I tackled implementation in my project.

Whereas most students in the class work on creating databases for their fictional store, my partner Katie Maser and I worked on providing the back-end support for all the other groups. We worked with the Professor, Dr. Todd Bacastow, to develop GEEK. GEEK stands for "Generic Expandable E-Store Kernel." Essentially, what Katie and I coded was a variety of SQL queries that groups could use to implement their databases without having to worry about implementation. They left the worrying to us.

For the little experience I had with databases coming into the course, the project was challenging, but it was well worth it. I think I got a better experience out of the course making it an Honors Option. And I learned a great deal of SQL, too. Thanks in great deal to the support of Dr. Bacastow, I think that IST 210H was one of the best classes I have taken at Penn State.

Class grade received: A (plus Honors distinction)
