/ Date:    November 11, 2000 Re:       Ways to Integrate IST 110 and SPC 100B Online
Online education is going to be the next major wave in higher education. With the technology that is currently available, online classes are cheaper to produce than packed classrooms, allows the students increased flexibility and freedom by allowing them to learn at their own time, and offers a quality distance education to adults that are returning for a degree or to students that otherwise would not be able to attend a university. Studies have proven that online education works, and in fact, early results are proving that students who study online may learn more than those in tradition classroom settings. Placing an integrated Information Sciences Technology 110 (IST 110) and Speech Communications 100B (SPC 100B) course online would be a benefit to both departments. The current IST 110 / SPC 100B course taught offline is considered to be a success, and with proper planning, an online version could, too, be a wonderful learning tool. The hardest part about placing a course, such as SPC 100B, online is the challenge of insuring that group work over the computer remains as simple as group work in the classroom. After a thorough analysis of different groupware tools on the market, we feel that our recommendations in the attached proposal will be a benefit when it comes down to designing the joint IST 110 / SPC 100B class online. Good luck with the venture into the virtual world! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact any of the group members. Sincerely, Click to view the
