since I got a set of clubs in 1997, I have been casually playing bad golf
with my family and friends. I once took lessons when I first got the clubs,
but a busy schedule prevented me from continuing more frequently. So I figured
that ESACT 138: Golf I would be the perfect class to take in the summer.
I could touch up my game and also fulfill the remainder of my exercise requirement.
And after the first couple days of class, I realized exactly how much "touching
up" my game needed!
The class, taught by a graduate student, Jay Willow, met almost every morning at 8:00 AM for about an hour and 15 minutes for six weeks. Some days we met at the Penn State Golf Course driving range, other days at the putting green near the Nittany Lion Inn. Either way, we never actually went golfing. The course focused only on etiquette and the game from 100 yards and in, which means a lot of putting, chipping, and pitching. Even on the driving range, the best club we hit with was our pitching wedges. We had five different tests that we were evaluated on. Three were skills tests: short putts, long putts, and chipping. Two tests were knowledge based: terms and rules. For our terms test, we were given a packet with about 50 words to find the definitions for and then memorize. For the rules test, we had to watch an etiquette video outside of class and jot down notes. The class was a refreshing way to begin the day every morning. Because it was at 8:00 AM, not only did it not affect my internship, but it was also not too hot out on the green to play on, like it would have been at midday. In fact, there was even a nice breeze on some days. I am glad
that I took Golf I because it helped me get my game back into shape. Golf
is one of my favorite sports. (Second only to football.) But on the flip
side, it did show me how bad my game truly is! As they say, "Practice,
practice, practice!" |
