  Communications 180
With my background in radio and my interest in telecommunications, it was no surprise that the curriculum in COMM 180: Survey of Broadcasting and Cable was something that kept me interested every day at class. Although the course is called "Survey of Broadcasting and Cable," we actually did a lot more than that. COMM 180 is more of an introduction to the telecommunications field: broadcasting, cable, the Internet and beyond. We covered all subjects from the audion tube to Golden Age of radio to television to cable management to packet based networks to Internet regulation and much more. Each topic in that class intrigued me.

The course was taught by Professor Patrick Parsons, who not only wrote one of our two text books, but also is the Head of the Telecommunications Department. It was a lecture based class, which I found a little tedious because I was already familiar with most of the material. Mr. Allison, my radio advisor in high school, gave me a very solid foundation in this area, which is a good thing. Every time Professor Parsons asked a question, even the obscure ones like who owns PaxTV, I always had my hand up, poised to answer the question.

For our final report, we had to choose one topic to write about from a list of nine. One option was to research a radio station and write a report on it. After meeting out of class with Professor Parsons, he allowed me to write a report on my former high school station, WWPH 107.9 FM. That year was the 25th anniversary of the station, and Professor Parsons agreed with me that it would be a nice service to the station to compile this report for them. He removed the ten page maximum for me, and that is a good thing because the report ended up being over 30 pages.

I took COMM 180 because I am interested in telecommunications and the course works towards my Telecommunications Minor. I am planning to continue with other courses in the Telecommunications Department, which couple as a nice addition to the Information Sciences and Technology Major and give me the background for the executive level job in the telecommunications field that I am looking for.

Class grade received: A
