I
didn't really envision creating something like this when I started
playing around in Macromedia Fireworks, but by the time I was done,
I felt I made a pretty nifty looking image! Titled, "The Planets"
because of the small satillite engulfed orbs, this image is perhaps
my favorite in the collection. Feel free to interpret it however you
like. Which planet is your favorite? Mine is the third from the right.
I created this file in a PNG, Portable Network Graphic, format. The
PNG image is ideal for complex web graphics because it combines many
of the positive aspects of both the JPEG and GIF formats in one image
type. For instance, PNG has lossless compression with 24-bit color,
a feature more inline with JPEG than GIF, but unlike JPEG, the PNG
format includes the ability for transparency -- in fact, it's 256
levels of transparency far outshines the minimal transparency features
inherent in the GIF format. However, the main drawback to the PNG
format is its size. PNG also does not support animation and is not
universally accepted, which can create compatibility issues with older
browsers.
Yet for this image, the PNG format is ideal. Notice the quality present
in the PNG format. For instance, take a look at the blend of colors,
from purple to gold, in the fouth planet. Had this been saved as a
JPEG or GIF, rather than a smooth transition through the colors, the
planet would have distinct slices of color. The text would also not
look as clear, nor would specific texture designs, such as the striped
pattern on the first planet and the grid pattern on the third planet
from the left, have been so distinct. Although the file size is likely
larger than if it was saved as a JPEG, the result loss of quality
would have ruined the image. And even considering of saving this a
a .gif file is out of the question, as a .gif file enlarged to this
size would have extremely noticable pixelation and degredation of
image quality. |
